1008: Brian Klaas | Embracing Uncertainty in a World of Flukes
Unexpected moments can change the world. Brian Klaas, author of Fluke, reveals how embracing life's randomness can empower us to make a difference. What We Discuss with Brian Klaas: Tiny actions or events can have massive downstream effects and consequences, as illustrated by historical examples like how a decades-old vacation spared Kyoto from nuclear bombing in WWII.Our lives and human history are shaped by chaos theory and random flukes, such as the asteroid impact that killed the dinosaurs or chance evolutionary events that led to complex life.Humans have cognitive biases that make us seek patterns and explanations, even when events are random. This can lead to superstitions, conspiracy theories, and a false sense of control.Wealth and success are often more influenced by luck and arbitrary factors than we like to admit, challenging the idea of pure meritocracy. While we can't control everything, we can influence the world around us through our actions. By embracing this mindset, we can feel more empowered and find meaning in our daily choices, recognizing that even small moments can have a significant impact on the future. And much more... 1006: Dr. Ramani | Surviving and Recovering from Narcissistic Abuse
It’s Not You author Dr. Ramani Durvasula is here to help us identify narcissists, overcome the abuse we suffer in relationships with them, and heal. What We Discuss with Dr. Ramani Durvasula: Narcissists can often be recognized by common traits like being know-it-alls, interrupting frequently, driving dangerously, throwing tantrums when frustrated, and displaying a strong sense of entitlement. But what kind of narcissists are you dealing with in your everyday life?Strategies for coping with narcissistic relationships when leaving is not an option. The role of cognitive dissonance in keeping people trapped in narcissistic relationships and how creating a written record of abusive behaviors can help overcome this psychological barrier.Growing up with a narcissistic parent can lead to difficulty forming one's own identity and a tendency to accommodate others' needs while suppressing one's own. This pattern can make a person more vulnerable to entering narcissistic relationships in adulthood. While it may seem daunting, healing from a narcissistic relationship is possible. By developing self-compassion, understanding that the abuse was not your fault, and gradually reclaiming aspects of your life that you enjoy (like hobbies, favorite foods, or social activities), you can begin to rebuild your sense of self and create a fulfilling life, even if the process takes time. And much more... 1005: David Fajgenbaum | Leveraging AI to Cure Rare Diseases
After treating his own rare disease, Chasing My Cure author David Fajgenbaum explains how existing drugs can help other sufferers survive the unknown. What We Discuss with David Fajgenbaum: Dr. David Fajgenbaum nearly died multiple times from a rare ailment called Castleman disease, for which there was no effective treatment available. The current healthcare system does not incentivize pharmaceutical companies to find new uses for existing drugs, especially for rare diseases, leaving many potential treatments undiscovered.Driven by his own experiences, Dr. Fajgenbaum realized that many existing FDA-approved drugs could be used to fight rare diseases for which they weren't originally intended.Dr. Fajgenbaum founded Every Cure, a nonprofit organization that uses AI to match existing drugs with rare diseases they could potentially treat, greatly accelerating the process of finding cures. You can make a positive impact by supporting organizations like Every Cure, which are working tirelessly to find treatments for rare diseases using innovative approaches. Consider donating to their cause, spreading awareness about their mission, or even sharing your own experiences with off-label drug use that has helped you or someone you know. Every contribution, no matter how small, can help bring hope and relief to those suffering from rare diseases. And much more... 1003: Husband's Bro's Obscene, But He Won't Intervene | Feedback Friday
Your creepy brother-in-law hit on your mom and 13-year-old sis at your wedding and now targets you, but your husband ignores it. Welcome to Feedback Friday! And in case you didn't already know it, Jordan Harbinger (@JordanHarbinger) and Gabriel Mizrahi (@GabeMizrahi) banter and take your comments and questions for Feedback Friday right here every week! Now let's dive in! On This Week's Feedback Friday, We Discuss: Every time Jordan goes to the barber, he comes home with another story. Here's the latest. It was the reddest of flags when the creepy brother-in-law-to-be hit on your mother and 13-year-old sister at your wedding. In the six years since, he's been making inappropriate advances toward you, but his brother — your husband — chooses to ignore this. How can you protect yourself and your children from this shadow-lurking predator if your husband won't?Even when you try your best to exude warmth and empathy, you've been told your tone can come off as condescending — not ideal for your job as a hostage negotiator, and not entirely appreciated by your long-enduring wife. How can you enhance your self-awareness to adjust this tone to a more socially appropriate level?Your sister and her family are obsessed with decreasing their carbon footprint to the point where your nephew has developed eco-anxiety. You want to attend a music festival that requires flying, but you're worried about the tension it might cause with your sister — who will definitely guilt you about choosing your own entertainment over her children's future. What should you do?While shopping with your family, you witnessed a father verbally and physically threatening his young son in public. As a mandated reporter through your job as an educator and someone who cares about children, you're struggling with the powerless you felt in the moment and wondering if you should have intervened or reported the incident. [Thanks to clinical psychologist Dr. Erin Margolis for helping us with this one!]After being laid off from your job of 18 years, you applied for two positions within the company. You were far along in the process with one and ended up getting an offer, but you also interviewed for the other and made a valuable professional connection. 1002: Charan Ranganath | The Mysteries of Memory and Why We Remember

1002: Charan Ranganath | The Mysteries of Memory and Why We Remember
Forget what you thought you knew about memory! Why We Remember author Charan Ranganath joins us to share surprising insights into how we recall the past. What We Discuss with Charan Ranganath: Memories are not literal recordings of the past, but are constructed in the moment based on bits and pieces of information. We often forget most details, and what we do remember can be distorted by our current context, beliefs, and the act of retelling memories.Emotion and attention play a key role in memory formation. Emotionally charged events tend to be remembered more vividly because chemicals like norepinephrine promote neural plasticity. Distinctive, attention-grabbing elements of an experience are more likely to be encoded into long-term memory.Memories can be unreliable in group settings due to interference between different people's recollections and the influence of dominant personalities. Eyewitness testimony is often flawed because of how malleable and suggestible human memory is.The sense that time is passing slowly or quickly is tied to the distinctiveness of our episodic memories. Repetitive, non-distinctive experiences (like pandemic lockdowns) can make days feel long but weeks pass in a blur due to a lack of memorable event boundaries. To improve your everyday memory, try to be mindful and limit distractions in the moment. You can deliberately create memory cues by vividly imagining a visual reminder that will help you recall information later. Diversifying your experiences and learning new things also helps keep your mind sharp and allows you to make creative connections. With some practice, you can harness your episodic memory to enrich your life. And much more... 1001: Haiti | Out of the Loop

1001: Haiti | Out of the Loop
Haiti Policy House founder Wolf Pamphile is here to explain why, despite the country's ongoing crises, he remains optimistic about Haiti's future. Welcome to what we're calling our "Out of the Loop" episodes, where we dig a little deeper into fascinating current events that may only register as a blip on the media's news cycle and have conversations with the people who find themselves immersed in them. On This Episode of Out of the Loop, We Discuss: Haiti has a long history of instability, starting with its colonial past under France and Spain, followed by a devastating war for independence, and continuing with foreign interventions, dictatorships, natural disasters, and gang violence that have hindered its development.Foreign powers, including France, the United States, and the Dominican Republic, have played significant roles in Haiti's struggles — from the crippling debt imposed by France after independence to the US occupation in the early 20th century and the Dominican Republic's anti-Haitian policies. The 2010 earthquake was a devastating blow to Haiti, killing over 300,000 people and setting the country back decades in terms of infrastructure and development. This event, along with political instability, has contributed to the rise of powerful gangs that control much of the country. The current situation in Haiti is dire, with gangs controlling large parts of the capital, Port-au-Prince, and engaging in kidnappings, violence, and drug trafficking. The international community is attempting to intervene, with Kenya leading a police force to help stabilize the country, but the effectiveness of this intervention remains to be seen.Despite the challenges, there are reasons for optimism about Haiti's future. A new generation of Haitians, both in Haiti and abroad, are working toward a better future for their country. Political groups are coming together to find consensus on the way forward, and organizations like the Haiti Policy House are ensuring that Haitian voices are heard in discussions about the country's future. While the road ahead is difficult, with determination, unity, and international support, Haiti can overcome its challenges and build a brighter future for its people. And much more!Connect with Jordan on Twitter, on Instagram, and on YouTube. [Part 2/2 — make sure to catch 1/2 here!] What We Discuss with Christopher Ahn: In 2019, activist group Free Joseon broke into the North Korean embassy in Madrid with the goal of helping staff defect to the West. But the mission didn't go according to plan and had to be aborted.Back in the US, Christopher Ahn was informed by the FBI that North Korea had discovered his identity as a participant in the botched embassy raid and planned to assassinate him. His identity was likely revealed when the FBI shared it with Spain.Christopher is now facing extradition to Spain on charges related to the embassy incident, based on statements from North Korean officials. However, the credibility of those statements is questionable given the likelihood they were coerced. If extradited to Spain, Christopher fears for his life from North Korean agents. His legal team is arguing there should be a humanitarian exception made to the extradition, given the unique circumstances, though this is an unprecedented legal argument.Despite the challenges he faces as a result of his actions, Christopher remains dedicated to helping others in need. 994: A.J. Jacobs | The Year of Living Constitutionally
What can a year of following the US Constitution per the founding fathers' intentions teach us about the future of democracy? A.J. Jacobs has answers here! What We Discuss with A.J. Jacobs: The founding fathers were not entirely in favor of pure democracy. They feared mob rule and wanted checks and balances to prevent a tyranny of the majority. The Constitution was a big step forward for democracy at the time, but still had elements of elitism. The original meaning and interpretation of parts of the Constitution, such as the Second Amendment and free speech rights, are quite different from how they are viewed today. Both liberal and conservative perspectives would likely disapprove of some of the original 18th century understandings. The founding fathers seemed more open to changing minds and flexible thinking compared to the intransigent political positions common today. Examples like Ben Franklin and James Madison illustrate their willingness to admit uncertainty and change opinions based on reason and evidence.American democracy is fragile and must be actively maintained and protected. A.J. Jacobs remains optimistic that reforms and hard work can help save the American democratic system, but it requires dedication and the American people deciding to "lift the sun up" on the country's future. We can help revive an appreciation for democracy by making it fun and celebratory again, like it was back in the early days of America. Baking "election cakes" to share and enjoy while voting, or hosting festivities at polling places, can inject some much-needed positivity and help encourage participation. Simple acts like this are a good starting point to begin strengthening our civic society and democratic institutions. And much more... 993: Johann Hari | The Skinny on 'Magic Pill' Weight-Loss Drugs
Are new weight loss drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy "magic" pills that can put an end to the obesity epidemic? Johann Hari is here to give us the skinny! What We Discuss with Johann Hari: Processed and ultra-processed foods are a major driver of the obesity epidemic, as they undermine the body's natural ability to feel full and satisfied after eating. Moving from fresh, whole foods to mostly processed foods is strongly linked to the dramatic rise in obesity rates.Obesity is a complex issue with biological, psychological, and social causes. Factors like genetics, emotional eating, trauma, and the food environment all play a role. Stigmatizing or shaming people for their weight is cruel and counterproductive.New weight loss drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy work by artificially boosting satiety hormones like GLP-1, helping people feel full faster and eat less. They are showing impressive weight loss results, but also come with potential risks and side effects that are not yet fully understood, especially in the long-term.While these new drugs may help many people, they are not a magic solution. They don't address the underlying drivers of the obesity crisis in the food system and environment. To make a real difference, we need broader changes to make healthy eating the easy, default option. The good news is, each of us can take positive steps today to improve our health, no matter our current weight. Focus on adding more whole, minimally processed foods to your diet, and find physical activities you truly enjoy. Prioritize getting good sleep, managing stress, and building a strong social support network. Small, sustainable lifestyle changes can make a big difference over time. Be patient and kind with yourself in the process. You have the power to transform your health, one choice at a time. And much more... 992: Royals | Skeptical Sunday
What's the point of the publicly funded British Royal family in the modern world? Andrew Gold puts the monarchy under a microscope on this Skeptical Sunday! On This Week's Skeptical Sunday: The British monarchy is a centuries-old institution that has had a significant impact on the UK's culture, politics, and history. While the monarch's role is largely ceremonial, the royal family still holds influence and plays a significant part in British society. The British Royal Family receives public funding through the Sovereign Grant, which is calculated as a percentage of the profits made by the Crown Estate. The Sovereign Grant covers official expenses, while the monarch also has personal income from private estates. The monarchy faces challenges in maintaining its relevance in an increasingly democratic and progressive world. The royal family must balance tradition with adapting to changing societal values and expectations. The popularity of individual members of the royal family, such as Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Charles, Prince William, and Prince Harry, can significantly impact public perception of the monarchy as a whole.Despite the controversies and challenges surrounding the British monarchy, it remains an integral part of the nation's identity and continues to captivate people worldwide. 990: Jonathan Haidt | How Gen Z Became the Anxious Generation
Jonathan Haidt is here to talk about his latest book, The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood Is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness. What We Discuss with Jonathan Haidt: Social media and smartphones have drastically altered childhood since the early 2010s, leading to increased rates of anxiety, depression, self-harm, and suicide among teens, especially girls.Virtual interactions on social media are disembodied, shallow, and can spread mental health issues among susceptible teens. Prestige biased learning causes teens to emulate influencers, even those promoting unhealthy behaviors. Smartphones and social media also enable sexual predators to easily target children online.Overprotection in the real world and underprotection online are both mistakes that need to be reversed. Parents have allowed kids too much unsupervised screen time while restricting their independence and free play in the physical world out of exaggerated fears.Schools and parents need to set clear boundaries around technology use. No smartphones before high school, no social media until age 16, and phone-free schools from bell to bell are key norms to establish. The longer parents delay introducing these technologies, the better.Although the situation is serious, positive change is possible when parents, educators, and lawmakers work together. Parents can start by giving kids more independence and free play time offline, schools can go phone-free, and governments can pass laws to make online spaces safer for kids. With collective action, we can restore a healthier childhood for the next generation. Small steps like "Free Play Fridays" for neighborhood kids can make a difference right away. By coming together to solve this, we can ensure today's youth have the space to develop into competent, well-adjusted adults. And much more...
